After reading about a similar experiment in WMW or SEW, I tried this a few years ago – surprisingly the CTR and conversion rate were both OK. Not better, but not worse than proper ad copies. I would bet that this particular ad copy would perform better than most as long as:
1. Your headline/display URI are good
2. the KWs in the adgroup are not ambiguous
3. your product/offer is good enough that you do not need to qualify the clicks through the adtext
4. no competing ad is using that trick

Both fair points – we meant it in a light-hearted rant, honest! Appreciate what both you guys are saying in terms of the keywords matching, however the focus of the article should be on the very weak advert copy and poor targeting. Also surely, you would add ’smell’ as a negative?!

Would have to concur with the comment above, your response is a little hysterical….
For those that do type in ’shoes that smell’ one suspects they’re looking for one of the many exciting fetish sites out there…advise avoiding spontaneous research exercise into this…my superiors now think me a little unsavoury.

I’d agree with you, if it was even remotely likely that anyone would type in “shoes that smell” as opposed to “feet that smell”, against which I would hazard, no advertiser with the keyword “shoes” on broad match would appear.

Try to limit your ire to realistic search terms, please!

Thanks for your comment! We have seen plenty of these examples, including a few high profile banks! However, I would have to say that the vast majority of “1 other unique queries” inclusions are probably due to laziness rather than any stroke of genius! I’m sure a load of PPC folk will try and suggest otherwise!

Haha, Epic SQR fail!
I once posted my campaign naming structure as copy, it was terribly embarrassing, but a simple mistake. Selecting and adding the “1 other unique queries” from an SQR and running with it is either genius or retarded.

SAKS does suck I worked there and was sexually assaulted/harrassed by an employee in the bathroom. Then they had the nerve to say maybe i was in the wrong bathroom because once i opened the door to the mens rooms. What the f**k does that have to do with anyone.

The HR people in Greenwich are phoney and condescending. They don’t even live in Greenwich they freakinhg live in the Bronx.

I love Neimun Marcus when they have 40 percent off sales. Yeah i know still f’n expensive. I also think Nordstrom rack and Marshalls is kewl.

Those idiots as Saks make like 8 bucks an hour and they have the nerve to treat people like crap. Get a real job all of them so superficial and no clue about what helping others is all about.
